The 2nd ASEAN Gene Editing (GnEd) Workshop, titled ‘Gene Editing Regulation and Prospects in ASEAN,’ took place from 10-11September 2024, at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia. The workshop convened representatives from the ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology & Innovation (COSTI) – Sub Committee on Biotechnology (SCB), the ASEAN Genetically Modified Food Testing Network (GMFNet), and key industry stakeholders.
Partners included the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), U.S. Mission to ASEAN, U.S.ASEAN Business Council, CropLife Asia, ISAAA, MABIC and ASEAN Secretariat. Experts from Japan, Australia, Canada, and the private sector discussed crop improvement technologies and policies. The workshop highlighted the need for strong regulatory frameworks to unlock gene-editing’s potential in agriculture and reinforced ASEAN’s commitment to science-based, trade-friendly biotech policies, supporting sustainable agriculture and food security.
