The ASEAN Science Diplomacy Workshop

The ASEAN Science Diplomacy Workshop was held on 1–2 December 2025 in Manila, Philippines. Co-organised by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) of the Philippines and the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), the two-day event convened emerging leaders, researchers, and policymakers from ASEAN Member States to strengthen regional and international cooperation through science diplomacy. The workshop was formally opened by DOST Secretary H.E. Renato Solidum Jr. and Dr. Leah J. Buendia, National COSTI (Committee on Science and Technology and Innovation) Chair for the Philippines, highlighting the importance of embedding scientific expertise into diplomatic and policy processes.

Through keynote addresses, expert-led sessions, and interactive activities—including group discussions and role-playing exercises as science diplomats—participants explored how science diplomacy can serve as a strategic tool to address transboundary challenges such as climate change, public health, quantum technologies, among others. This initiative is aligned with the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) 2026–2035, demonstrating ASEAN’s commitment to leveraging science diplomacy as a cornerstone for informed decision-making and regional resilience.
